If you ever get to the point wherein you’d need to make a claim, you’d want to have an inventory of your things. This way, your home insurance provider would be able to fairly compensate you for everything that you’ve lost.
Specify your item’s brand and model number on your inventory. Otherwise, your insurance company might end up replacing them with the cheapest comparable item.
What you should include on your inventory
Documenting every single item in your household is a painstaking process. So, carefully pick the things that you want to include on your inventory. You’d want to include expensive tech items like computer, television, and camera. Relatively costly items such as power tools, fine china, and your collection of expensive shoes should also be listed.
It would also be an excellent idea to take a picture of all your general stuff such your kitchen cabinet’s inside and your entire closet. This way, you don’t have to list everything down, but you still see the things that you have.
Different ways to document
Video – This is the fastest and most convenient way to create your inventory. All you have to do is walk around the house while recording everything. Most insurance companies accept video as proof when making a claim. However, it would still be best to check with your insurance provider first.
In taking the video, ensure that you don’t just clearly get the item in a frame, you should also take a close-up shot of its model and serial number. If you still have its receipt, include it on your recording too. The downside of using video is that if you record in a long video, scrubbing through it all to look for all your stuff can be inconvenient. An alternative, which can be tedious, is recording them in individual clips and organizing them.
Mobile app – There are inventory apps like Know Your Stuff and Sortly that you can easily download these days. They also have their web interfaces, if that’s what you prefer. Use these apps to list down your items and don’t forget to include the items’ and receipts’ (if you still have them) photos.
The advantage of this is it already has entry fields where you can put the item’s information like price, purchase date, serial number, etc. You can include the product’s web link, organize the items in folders, and add tags to them too.
Create a spreadsheet – If you want to keep your inventory offline, the simplest way is using a spreadsheet. Create columns for all the information that you need like name, description, price, serial number, etc. This is highly customizable, so you can have complete control over what you want to see.
